Expanded Tax Prep Services Available

The United Way of Marion and Taylor Counties announced their new expanded Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program today, which continues the popular MyFreeTaxes service that allows for online filing and adds in-person tax preparation services at their new office on Washington Street.

“Tax season is a source of confusion and stress for most Americans,” said Brett White, Executive Director “Many are worried they’ll make a mistake, won’t get their full refund or will pay too much.  With VITA and MyFreeTaxes, filers can get support from IRS-certified volunteers and cut down the time it takes to complete their returns.”

The expanded VITA program will help more individuals and families on the path to financial stability. VITA operates in local community centers, agencies, and libraries across the country to make free tax prep services accessible to individuals and families. On average, American taxpayers spend $176 or more on tax preparation fees. VITA is crucial to individuals with fixed incomes, people with disabilities, and those who are struggling to make ends meet. VITA allows filers to maximize their refunds through tax credits and avoid preparation and filing fees.

Residents with a combined household income of $56,000 or less in 2019 are eligible for the in-person service.

MyFreeTaxes.com is a safe, easy, and secure way to file your return. This year, the income cap has been removed, so anyone, no matter your income level, is eligible to use MyFreeTaxes and file completely free. The online platform is powered by H&R Block and their premium software.

In-person appointments are available on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through March 27th. To schedule an appointment, call 304-366-4550. For more information, visit unitedwaymtc.org/taxes.
